A lot has been said about ummeed, in novels, inspirational talks, self help books, now days we even have "capitalist coke" singing "ummeedo wali dhoop" hoping their sales to go up and their revenue is increased by leaps and bounds.... I wonder what does the word "Ummeed" stand for?
When I was practicing as a Criminal Lawyer, I saw many people who were down and out... were in deep trouble financially, as well as had their reputation at stake and most of them used to say, "some day I will come out of the bad phase of their lives somehow as "UMMEED PE DUNIYA KAYAM HAI". I though , the word umeed here represnted their urge, hope of getting out of the dump and reaching to a "dignified place" and having their share of "worthy things". In this context I thought umeed as a very positive concept, and I had highest of regards for their spirits.

Then I came across the other aspect of ummeed. I came aross people who were nicely placed in heir lives, hade all kinds of financial security, life filled with all possible material comforts, good reputation and yet they creebed and said, "I need a better job which will pay me more so that all my needs are satisfied, I need a better car, a better cell phone, a bigger house, hope that happens soon as "UMMEED PE DUNIYA KAYAM HAI"
Prior to coming across to this breed of hopefuls, I had never thought of this aspect of ummeed. The same word which i thought was the most positive word in the entire human life suddenly reflected dissatisfaction.
In one way UMMEED is urge, drive which helps a person to come out of dumps, fight against all odds and reach a stage where he can proudly stand for his own self. But on the other hand it is the synonim of dissatisfaction, which never allows a person to settle down in what he has got and always keeps him hungry, greedy for more....
Till date I have not been able to undersatnd the correct meaning of "UMMEED ". I m sure I will be able to define it for my own satisfaction.... some day I hope some day.... as they say "UMEED PE DUNIYA KAYAM HAI" :)
